Solidity and Permeability.
Located in Toorak, The Unfolding brings together six private residences within a unified architectural form. The design explores the relationship between privacy and openness, creating a balance between protection and connection to the surrounding neighbourhood.
The architecture responds differently to its surroundings. Along the street, a layered brick screen provides privacy and a sense of enclosure, while to the north, the residences open towards natural light and views. These contrasting conditions are brought together through a consistent architectural language, allowing the building to remain protective without becoming closed.
Traditionally associated with solidity and permanence, brick is reinterpreted through a more permeable architectural expression. Slender horizontal brick elements trace the gently curved edges of the building, forming a continuous surface that appears solid from a distance yet reveals glimpses of the spaces beyond. Through carefully considered spacing, depth and curvature, the brickwork becomes both a protective enclosure and a filtering screen, transforming a traditionally solid material into an expression of lightness and movement.
At ground level, established trees, layered planting and garden walls soften the building's relationship with the street. Architecture and landscape become intertwined, creating a gradual transition between the public realm and the privacy of each home. A central screened entrance marks a shared moment of arrival, bringing the six residences together within a common architectural identity.
As daylight moves across the brickwork, shifting light and shadow reveal the depth and rhythm of its layered construction. Together with the gradually maturing landscape, these subtle changes allow the building's character to evolve over time, bringing a sense of movement to an otherwise enduring architectural form.
