Set within Canterbury's established garden streetscape, The Hopetoun brings twelve residences together in a building that seeks a quiet relationship with its surroundings.
The architecture is composed through a measured rhythm of masonry, recessed openings and planted terraces. Handmade Krause brick lends depth and texture to the façade, while landscape softens the building's edges and mediates between the street and private living spaces. Rather than being treated as an addition to the architecture, planting becomes integral to its composition, shaping privacy, outlook and the experience of changing seasons.
A sequence of carefully considered thresholds marks the transition from the shared building to individual homes. Generous living spaces extend towards private courtyards and terraces, allowing light and landscape to become part of everyday life. The interiors continue the architectural language through natural stone, timber and finely detailed joinery, where material, proportion and craftsmanship take precedence over decoration.
Developed in collaboration with landscape architects Acre, The Hopetoun explores a more intimate form of apartment living — one in which architecture and landscape work together to create a sense of permanence, privacy and belonging.
