The Gratis explores how apartment living can retain the spatial generosity, privacy and connection to landscape traditionally associated with an individual home.

Set within the established residential character of Deepdene, twelve three-bedroom residences are brought together in a single, composed building. The façade is defined by rhythmic openings, balanced proportions and a restrained palette of natural stone and dark-toned materials. Rather than expressing each apartment individually, the architecture establishes a collective identity within the surrounding streetscape.

Generous living spaces extend towards private terraces, balconies and courtyards, creating a close relationship between the interiors and the surrounding gardens. Developed in collaboration with interior designer Adele Bates and landscape architect Jack Merlo, the project brings together architecture, interiors and landscape while allowing each discipline its own expression.

The Gratis offers an alternative to conventional apartment living — combining the ease of a smaller residential community with the scale, privacy and garden connection of a family home.
