A House in Layers.
The Grange is a contemporary residence in Toorak, shaped by the natural slope of its site. Through a series of interconnected levels, the design brings together private retreats, shared spaces and outdoor living, each establishing a distinct relationship with the landscape and views towards Melbourne's skyline.
The home is organised through a carefully considered vertical sequence. Leisure spaces occupy the lower levels, while family bedrooms, shared living spaces and the master suite are arranged across successive levels. This arrangement creates a gradual transition between privacy and openness, allowing each level to respond to its particular setting.
The principal living spaces open onto an elevated terrace and swimming pool, extending everyday life beyond the interior. A colonnade of stone frames creates a sheltered outdoor room, where the architectural structure defines a sense of enclosure while framing views towards the city. Here, the terrace becomes an integral part of the home's living environment.
The architectural expression is defined by layered stone volumes, strong horizontal planes and deeply recessed glazing. The interplay between solid and open elements gives the building depth and rhythm. Carefully proportioned structural frames lend the architecture a sense of permanence, balanced by the openness of its terraces and glazing.
Within this predominantly orthogonal framework, the interiors introduce a contrasting language of sculptural curves and flowing forms. Sweeping walls and subtle shifts in geometry guide movement between spaces, creating moments of intimacy within the larger architectural composition. Natural stone, warm timber and carefully controlled light establish material continuity while giving individual rooms their own character.
Across its many levels, The Grange reveals a home shaped not simply by the spaces it contains, but by the relationships between them.
